Founded more than 35 years ago as a haven for immigrants and refugees, HUF has grown to serve diverse and multi-cultural working families from the United States as well as more than 25 other countries. We provide a diverse range of wrap-around services to help clients of all ages, from preschoolers to adults, successfully transition to a productive new life.

Q. Is Hispanic Unity (HUF) part of a national network of agencies?

A. HUF is a private, Human Services Agency / 501(c) (3). The agency is an affiliate member of UnidosUS (www.UnidosUS.org), the premier largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States.

Q. How many Board Members does Hispanic Unity have?

A. HUF is governed by a 16-21 member Board of Directors. Meet HUF’s volunteer leaders.

Q. How involved in your board and how to they provide oversight over HUF’s work?

A. HUF is fortunate to have very hands-on and engaged board members. Every board member is involved in one of HUF’s Standing Committees: Finance, Audit, Program and Marketing, Fund Development and Advocacy as well as ad-hoc committees such as Strategic Planning or Facilities.
HUF committees are robust and meet on a monthly basis. The committees are chaired by HUF board members and include very talented community experts/leaders in their respective fields. Meet our other HUF Committee Volunteers (non-Board Members) who also serve as members.

Q. Is Hispanic Unity audited?

A. Yes, HUF is audited annually. Our fiscal year is Jan-Dec. We engage an external audit firm and our IRS 990 form is available on this website and our Annual Financial Statements are available upon request.

Q. How large is your staff and what is your budget?

A. HUF’s staff ranges from 200-225 employees and an operating budget of approximately $5 million.

Q. How is HUF funded?

A. 50% of the agency’s funding comes from government; the remainder from the agency’s own fundraising efforts, corporate community, foundations, individuals and in-kind support.

Q. What is your administrative overhead cost?

A. HUF is proud to have very low overhead. According to our 990 Reports (over a five-year period);90-92% of HUF’s funds go directly to the program area.  An audit firm analyzed HUF’s performance vs. other similar non-profits in this region and HUF far exceeded the other local charities in this ratio. The other nonprofits averaged 80% of funds going to programs. HUF also has exceptionally low fund raising expenses. Industry average is under 35%, HUF averages 5-9.5% annually.

Hispanic Unity of Florida (HUF) is a non-profit founded in 1982 by community leaders to ease the acculturation transition for newcomers from other nations. Today, HUF provides assistance through 12 programs and 30+ services in four languages to South Florida's diverse community. HUF, an UnidosUS Affiliate, is one of South Florida’s largest agencies dedicated to the immigrant population, providing them with the tools they need to build a new life. Since its inception, HUF has served nearly 500,000 people.
